Basic Rules of Backgammon

Here are the basics for backgammon. You will learn the how to move the checkers, using the double cube and the object of the game.

Object of the Game
The goal is to get all your checkers into your home area. Once there, you roll the dice to remove them off the board. The first to remove all checkers is the winner.

The game starts by both players rolling a die and highest roll starts. The winner then rolls both dice and then decides what checkers to move. If you roll doubles, you get to move four times the number on the die.

Moving Checkers
Black checkers move clockwise and white checker counter clockwise. You roll the dice and can either move the total for one checker, or move two checkers, one for each die. The checker can only move provided the space is empty, already belongs to you or your opponent only has one checker on that space.

If your opponent only has one checker there and you land on it is removed and placed on the bar. If you have a checker or checkers on the bar then you must move them all off the bar before moving any other checker. If you cannot move the checker(s) off the bar, you lose your turn.

Bearing Off
This is the last part of the game, when all your checkers are in your home and you remove them. You remove checkers that correspond to the roll or you can add the die together to remove one. If your checkers are on a point that is a lower number than the dice roll, you can remove the highest one provided there are no checkers on higher points.

The Double Cube
The cube has six sides numbered 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64. If you wish to raise the stakes of the game you can pick up the cube and offer it to your opponent with the number 2. This doubles the wager and they can either accept or forfeit the game. If they accept they would now control the cube and can later double the stakes again, if they wish.
